MOT CENTRE, MOT TESTING CENTRE

MOT GUIDE

All MOT testing is supervised by VOSA an agency of the Department of Transport and all testing stations must be VOSA approved. Cherrys MOT Centre is approved for Class 4 type vehicles, that's cars and small commercial vehicles.

The law requires that a MOT test must be carried out annually on all UK registered vehicles over 3 years old. It may be carried out up to 1 month prior to the official test date without affecting the period covered by a MOT Certificate.

All MOT test results are now held on a central database called MOT Computerisation and anyone with a legitimate interest can obtain information about a test on a vehicle. You can also check the MOT history/mileage of your vehicle FREE online here!

Many people use the MOT test to detect any problems which they then rectify before a re-test. Here you'll find useful information on what is examined during the test and how to qualify for a free re-test.

The MOT Test

The body and vehicle structure...

Must be free from excessive corrosion or damage in specific areas, including sills and bumpers. There must not be any sharp edges likely to cause injury.

The Fuel System...

Must not have any leaks along its whole system - from tank to engine and the fuel cap must fasten and seal securely.

The Exhaust System...

Must meet the current requirements for exhaust emissions, dependant on the age and fuel type of the vehicle. It must be secure, complete, without serious leaks and silence effectively.

The Seats...

The mountings must be free from rust, structurally sound and in correct working order. All belts installed are checked for type, condition, operation and security. All compulsory seat belts must be in place.

The Doors...

All doors should shut correctly and be secure. Front doors should open from inside and outside the vehicle.

The Mirrors...

The Brakes...

The Tyres & Wheels...

All tyres need to be within the legal limit of tread depth - 1.6mm minimum depth across 70% of the complete tyre. No splits, gashes, bulges or illegal repairs and must be the correct size and type. Spare tyres are not inspected. The wheels and bearings need to be in good working order with no play, a tell tale sign of a bearing on its way out is a whirr from the wheel when cornering usually only in one direction.

The Registration Plates...

Must be clean, securely fixed and the characters correctly formed and spaced.

The Lights...

The condition and correct operation of Headlights - low beam & high beam, Sidelights, Brake lights, Indicators & side repeaters, Number Plate lights, Drivers side Fog light and Hazard warning lights.

The Wipers and Washers...

Must operate efficiently enough to give the driver a clear view ahead.

The Windscreen...

Must be in good condition and give the driver a good view of the road. Testers will check that damage is no larger than 40mm in the whole of the swept area of the screen and that in the central view of the driver, called Zone A which is 290mm wide (within the swept area and centred on the steering wheel), any damage is no larger than 10mm wide.

The Horn...

Must operate correctly and be a suitable type.

The Steering and Suspension...

Must be in a satisfactory condition and operation. All shock absorbers, mountings, boots, bushes need to be free from corrosion and all dampers have to be free from leaks.

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)...

Is on vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1980. Not more than one different VIN is displayed except on multistage build vehicles.

Upon your vehicle passing the test you will be issued a VT20 Certificate, a copy of which can be obtained from any MOT Testing Station for a fee not exceeding £10.00.

The MOT Re-Test

Should the vehicle fail the test, you will be issued with a VT3O Certificate stating the reasons causing the car to fail. Be sure that you are clear about what rectification is required for a pass to be issued.

If your vehicle is brought back to Cherrys MOT testing station within the following 14 days or 10 working days, then the re-test will not attract any additional fee's.
